About

Theatre Works, 2025

Presented by Dirty Pennies Theatre with Geelong Arts Centre

Sometimes family chooses you’

After another unsuccessful round of IVF, Lou and Maud are broke and running out of options. Things take an unexpected turn when they inherit a house from an estranged relative, but they struggle to assimilate in their eerily pristine new neighbourhood. Made worse by the presence of a monster living inside their home.

From the acclaimed writer of ‘Lemon Tree on Dreg Street’, Dirty Pennies in partnership with Geelong Arts Centre's Creative Engine presents a new queer gothic horror that explores the terror of planning a future in an increasingly frightening world, and the lengths we’ll go to, to keep our monsters at bay.

The production of Our Monster's Name is Jerry has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. The development of Our Monster's Name is Jerry has been assisted by Geelong Arts Centre and City of Melbourne.

Reviews

★★★★ - Theatre Matters

The most effective and tantalising Australian Horror since Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook.”

“Savanna Wegman’s set is a wonder; from a stunning opening curtain to the design of Briarwood itself; a model of dilapidated grandeur filled with some very clever nooks and crannies that allow for some good old fashioned stage trickery.”

- Theatre Matters

“A truly exceptional work”

- The Theatre Aus

This was staged so excellently…I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

- Ryan Hamilton

“A hauntingly visceral and deeply moving production that lingers in the mind long after the final blackout.”

- Theatre Haus

“Alanah Guiry's direction adds lots of flowing and gentle movements in the actors' actions that heightens the conflict and mystery taking place, especially at its most terrifying.”
-- Myron My, My Melbourne arts

“Possibly the most magnificent curtain ever hung across a performance space”
-- Crystal Stivala, The Theatre

“This imaginative, risk-taking production takes the tropes of the horror genre to new and original places.  Each aspect is integrated into the whole: text, performance, design and sound”
-- Michael Brindley, Stage Whispers
